“Change is hard at first, messy in the middle, and gorgeous at the end.” – Robin Sharma

I recently realized that joy works a lot like a GPS.

It doesn’t scream at you when you’re lost. It doesn’t flash warnings or threaten to cancel your trip. Nope—joy just quietly whispers, “Rerouting…” in a chill, almost suspiciously patient voice.

And at first, you ignore it. You’re like, “No thanks, Joy. I know a shortcut through mild panic and self-doubt.” So off you go, forging a scenic route through Stressville, with rest stops at Procrastination Station and a quick selfie at Existential Dread Plaza. Lovely, really. Smells like burnt toast and worry.

But then, somewhere along the breakdown lane of life, you start to hear that whisper again: “Rerouting…”

And for once, you listen.

You turn ever so slightly toward something that feels… lighter. You’re still a little lost, but no longer white-knuckling the steering wheel. Instead of pushing yourself forward with guilt, shame, or caffeine, you’re pulled toward something brighter.

Because here’s the truth:
Change really is hard.
Then it gets messy.
Then, one day, you look up and think, “Oh wow. This is kind of… gorgeous.”

So how do you start letting joy be your GPS?

Consistency.

Like Robin Sharma says, “Consistency is the mother of mastery.” And—bonus!—neurobiology agrees. It takes about 66 days to form a habit (sorry, 21-day myths), which means if you want joy to become your autopilot, you’ve gotta give your brain a trail to follow.

Here’s a simple, life-changing way to start:

🌞 Create a tiny morning joy ritual.

  • Visualize what joyful thing you’d like to experience today.
  • Ask: What am I grateful for today?
  • Ask: What would I like to let go of today?
  • Pick a mantra to carry through the day—something playful like “Fun is not frivolous.” (Because it’s not.)

Here’s what happens when you do that consistently:

Your brain starts clearing a path.
At first, it’s like trailblazing through tall, tangled grass.
Do it again the next day, and the path becomes easier.
Keep going, and boom—you’ve got a joy-road.
Stick with it, and suddenly you’re cruising the Joy Superhighway, windows down, bad playlist blasting, not a detour through Anxiety Alley in sight.

So the next time you hear that quiet little whisper—“Rerouting…”—don’t ignore it.

Let joy take the wheel.

And maybe keep snacks in the glove compartment. Joy loves snacks.
